Visual Basic has been around for a long time and has been growing in popularity all the while. The word "Basic" in Visual Basic may be misleading. You might think that all serious Windows applications should be written using the C/C++ compiler and SDK for Windows. However, this is not the case. You can write advanced Windows programs in a fraction of the time it takes to write the same programs using other programming languages.

Perhaps one of the most powerful features of Visual Basic is its capability to incorporate Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs). If the programmer wants to develop a program using a feature not available from the tool box, then the use of a DLL will almost certainly provide the answer

Visual Basic 6 comes in three flavours : the Standard or Learning edition, the Professional edition and the Enterprise edition. The Professional edition contains everything in the Learning edition plus additional ActiveX controls including Internet controls and Crystal Report Writer. The Enterprise edition contains everything in the Professional edition plus the Automation Manager, the Component Manager, database management tools and Microsoft Visual Source Safe project orientated version control system. It will not run in Windows 3.1. It will only run in Windows 95 and Windows NT or greater

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or later, or Microsoft Windows 95 or later.
24 MB RAM for Windows 95/98, 32 MB for Windows NT.
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.01 or later (version 4.01 Service Pack 1 or later for DHTML application developers, and 4.xfor end-users of these applications).
Disk space requirements:
- Standard Edition: typical installation 48 MB, full installation 80 MB.
- Professional Edition: typical installation 48 MB, full installation 80 MB.
- Enterprise Edition: typical installation 128 MB, full installation 147 MB.
- Additional components (if required): MSDN (for documentation): 67 MB, Internet Explorer 4.x: approximately 66 MB.
CD-ROM (no MS-DOS support assumed).
